Action: Mentor Peers and Students on Writing Skills

This is a key action to take in order to maximize my current skill set, however, it goes further in that mentorship on writing skills is a form of education that I am highly qualified to provide, and gaining that experience is an important goal for me. Considering how much I anticipate needing resources and time from my peers in particular, this is an excellent opportunity to give something back, as writing skills are incredibly important for an MRP.

What will I do to achieve this?

  • Be proactive in checking in with the cohort on how they are feeling about their writing assignments, whenever they come up, or any other opportunity to proactively provide mentorship on writing.
    • Progress: Proofread a peer’s research proposal draft for Inclusive Research Methods course, held Teams meeting to deliver feedback live
  • Build a static repository of general writing skills guidelines that could be integrated into the planned learning network that will act as a conduit for sharing knowledge and resources within the cohort – this is another type of experience as an educator, providing asynchronous materials and ensuring that it works well by seeking feedback from those who need to use it. Ensure that peers feel encouraged to reach out for my advising if they need more than what the asynchronous material can provide.

Which goals will this action help me accomplish?

What resource(s) will I need to be successful?

  • Communication means to reach my peers (Teams, Canvas, etc)
  • Platform for learning network, collaboratively chosen and developed to include a place for sharing writing guidance
