Action: Participate in and Contribute to Perceptual Artifacts Lab

The Perceptual Artifacts Lab is a group of instructors, students and industry partners affiliated with OCAD, led by Peter Coppin. The lab mainly focuses on developing cross-sensory interface design projects that meet the standards of OCAD’s inclusive design ideology. Currently, the lab is working on an AR authoring tool in collaboration with SenseTech Solutions. The lab’s subjects of interest align with my own in that my planned MRP will very likely involve cross-sensory interaction design and a significant focus on perception, so I have much to gain as well as contribute to the lab and its agenda.

What will I do to achieve this?

  • Connect with lab organizers and arrange for me to attend the weekly meetings
    • Successfully achieved: October 2021
  • Participate in the lab’s relevant projects
    • Progress: participated in a co-design session intended to test a SenseTech-produced AR authoring tool (December 8, 2021)
    • Planned: become more familiar with the currently ongoing projects that the lab is involved in.
    • Planned: network with the members of the lab and discover what potential benefits my participation may have.
  • Develop practical and theoretical knowledge in domains relevant to both my MRP and the lab’s interests in order to build up my capabilities for contribution

Which goals will this action help me accomplish?

What resource(s) will I need to be successful?

Primarily, I will need to consistently work on developing my practical and theoretical knowledge related to cross-sensory interfaces and emerging technologies related to the lab’s areas of study. I will also need to use the opportunities in course work throughout the MDes Inclusive Design degree to develop projects related to these areas of study, so long as it fits with the course content and my other goals relevant to my MRP.
