Goal: Develop Academic & Professional Network

Goal: Develop Academic & Professional Network

How does this goal fit?

Networking has typically been very difficult for me, and is on of the main reasons I had to take a step back before pursuing my Master’s degree (lack of relationships led to being unable to secure enough academic references to apply). As an introvert, my instincts usually compel me to shy away from contacting people when there is no clear reason to do so, such as being present in a class, or working together on a project.

This is especially true when it comes to mentor figures, such as professors and industry professionals, whom I often assume are short on time and motivation to build a relationship with me. This is a damaging behaviour pattern that I cannot accept during such a vital period for establishing my career direction.

What activities will progress me towards this goal?

What resource(s) will I need to achieve this goal?

Mainly, I need to be active in seeking out opportunities to meet people and build relationships through discussing common topics of interest, and / or presenting a rationale to work together in some capacity. I have already made progress on this goal by joining the weekly Perceptual Artifacts Lab meetings, presenting work and contributing to discussions as often as I can.

The various communication methods that the Department of Graduate Studies and OCAD University more broadly use to promote events also play a vital role in staying on top of this goal. I must prioritize setting aside time to attend relevant events, and push myself to ask questions and contribute to discussions in order to maximize the potential for making connections. For this, the OCAD U and School of Graduate Studies emails and blogs are excellent sources for opportunities.

I also closely follow the conversations our cohort regularly has on Microsoft Teams, and am planning on taking the lead on developing a framework for a learning network for the cohort, specifically aimed at resource sharing. If successful, the learning network itself will be a key resource for networking in addition to its many other functions as a learning tool.

Finally, whenever possible, making use of instructor and / or TA office hours that are part of my courses is essential.
